March 12,2020

Hello D25,

As we all know, the virus is sweeping through our state and our county has issued a state of emergency urging people to not gather in groups of more than 10 people. (https://www.whatcomcounty.us/3369/Current-Recommendations-For-Whatcom-Coun)

Amid the concerns and public health and safety warnings, many members are looking for guidance on meetings.

D25 discussed this evening how we can provide guidance through this pandemic. The below is what we agreed to share with you all.

Area sent out an email saying that “While an outside issue, the corona-virus potentially can affect the health and safety of our meetings.”

As per usual, it is up to each group to decide whether to close or stay open. It is up to each member to decide whether to attend a meeting or not. However, we strongly urge groups to heed the county board of health warning, as Tradition one states “Our common welfare should come first; personal progress for the greatest number depends upon unity.” Let us practice this principal in all our affairs, in this case, for the common welfare of our county.

Groups have many options besides meeting in person. Please speak with your group to help ascertain which option works best. Listed below are some of the options:

1) Temporarily cancel meetings-
1a) Consider having 1 or 2 people volunteer to physically show up in case of any newcomers that might arrive.
1b) Have someone post a sign advertising the closure, possibly listing the district website to point folks in the right direction.
2) Have the group continue to meet at the regularly scheduled time via video or phone conferencing- such as Zoom (https://zoom.us/) or FreeConferenceCall  (https://www.freeconferencecall.com/)
4) Use electronic meetings
5) Use phone meetings
6) Meet up with small groups of your Alanon friends for support
7) Use our CAL and The Forum
8) Use the call list from your group
9) Talk to your sponsor. Don’t have one yet? No problem; now is a great time to get one!!! 😄

Tip- To keep groups funded during absences or closures, encourage members to send checks to your group treasurer, or consider using Venmo.  (https://venmo.com/)

*** Please keep District informed of any group changes by emailing me here. I will make sure the info gets updated on our District and Area websites (http://whatcomafg.org/ and  http://wa-al-anon.org/
*** Please send any meeting links or phone numbers & access codes so they can be listed on the website so people can find the meeting!!!

PreCon Assembly is coming up April 3rd & 4th. We are not yet sure if it will continue or be cancelled. I will keep you informed as we learn more.

Wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and stay home if you’re sick!!! Let’s all get through this safely and healthily.

Stay healthy, Whatcom!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Your District DR,
Mandy
